CANCER RECOVERY & REHABILITATION
Cancer Rehabilitation is a fundamental part of patient recovery and wellbeing and is valuable to anyone with cancer and those recovering from cancer treatment. Gaining the best physical, social, psychological, and work-related functioning during and after cancer treatment is of great value and necessary in order to have optimal quality of life.
The goal of rehabilitation is to help a person regain control over many aspects of their lives and remain as independent and productive as possible. It has been recognised that Physical Therapy interventions may prevent the onset, symptoms and progression of impairments, functional limitations and disabilities that may result from the side effects of cancer treatments.
The key issue as always is getting EARLY REFERRAL to detect and treat physical impairments BEFORE it is months down the track and further decline takes place. This is the message we are trying to get through to Oncology teams – no one sends a stroke patient or a cardiac bypass patient home without adequate rehabilitation in place – so why should cancer patients who have been through gruelling treatments be any different?
Therefore we offer many types of treatment services depending on the patient’s requirements. These specialised services range from diagnosis right through to recovery and maintenance.
PINC (FOR WOMEN) & STEEL (FOR MEN) CANCER REHABILITATION
The PINC and STEEL Cancer Rehabilitation Programmes were developed by New Zealander Lou James, an experienced physiotherapist, Pilates clinician, former NZ triathlon representative and trustee of the PINC AND STEEL CANCER REHABILITATION TRUST. Initially, Lou started the program to help women recovering from breast cancer surgery and treatments. However, as research shows, exercise therapy is a very important component in recovery from a cancer diagnosis and the effects of its treatment and therefore the program today has evolved to assist both men and women recover from all cancers. Hence the names “Pink Pilates” designed for women and “Steel Pilates” designed for men.
